FAQs: How to Prepare Your Child for Oral Surgery?

Is Anesthesia Safe for Children?

Our anesthesiologists have extensive experience in providing anesthesia to pediatric patients, so you can rest assured that your child is in good hands. Before any procedure takes place, you will be asked to explain your child’s current health state and medical history, both of which play a part in determining the best anesthesia option during surgery. You will be made aware of any side effects or possible risks of anesthesia, as well as ways to reduce those risks. To ensure the safety of your child during surgery, it is very important to answer all of the medical questions as thoroughly and honestly as possible. Though some things may seem unnecessary to disclose, there are many things, such as medications, that could have an effect on the anesthesia and how your child reacts to it.

Can My Child Eat Before Surgery?

We know kids are hungry and thirsty the day of surgery. However, it is important that your child follow the feeding instructions provided by the Center prior to their procedure.

When your child is receiving the anesthetic before pediatric surgery, body muscles are very relaxed. This includes the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract. Normally, the stomach, esophagus, and the opening between the two do not allow food to regurgitate backwards. When the body is relaxed by anesthetics, there is an increased chance of vomiting. Because the patient would not be awake at this time and would not have control of the vomiting, there is a significant risk of stomach contents entering the lungs.

So, the “empty stomach” rule is about keeping your child safe during anesthesia. For this reason, it is very important that we know the last time food or drink was consumed. We appreciate your cooperation in minimizing risk, and we promise, there are popsicles and juice waiting in the recovery area!

How Should My Child Dress for Surgery?

The idea of surgery can be scary. To help your child feel safe, we want him/her to feel relaxed when they come in for their procedure. They can show up in their pajamas or street clothes, whichever they feel comfortable in. We also have blankets to keep them warm and cozy before, during and after surgery.
